A helicopter generates lift by spinning giant rotor blades around a central hub. But thanks to Newton, it’s well understood that any force applied has an equal and opposite reaction. So all of the power put into lifting the helicopter by spinning the blades in one direction causes the body of the helicopter to want to spin in the same direction as the rotors. This spin is called “yaw.”

What is yaw?

Yaw is commonly described in the rotorcraft industry as the “torque effect.” Yaw is the spinning that the body of the helicopter does when the rotors are spinning.

How does a tail rotor compensate for yaw?

The tail rotor counteracts yaw by applying a horizontal thrust in the opposite direction to the plane of rotation. Basically as the body of the helicopter tries to spin in the opposite direction the rotor system, the tail rotor spinning vertically provides a sideways counter thrust to the helicopter body trying to spin.

Force and counter force cause more problems

This causes a whole new problem called “translating tendency.” Imagine a rotor system spinning to the left. This causes the body of the helicopter to want to spin to the left as well. Meanwhile you have a tail rotor providing thrust to the back end of the helicopter causing an anti-torque effect to the body of the helicopter so that the helicopter does not spin against the rotor system. With the rotor system spinning left, and tail rotor providing thrust to the body of the helicopter to turn to the right, the helicopter has a tendency to drift to the right as both forces fight one another. This is compensated for in a couple of ways. In less sophisticated helicopters, the pilot makes a constant input to the cyclic to the right with a slight left pedal to prevent yawing. This is called “cyclic feathering.” Or in more sophisticated helicopters, the manufacturers rig it into the flight controls. This is called “rigging.” However, when manufacturers mathematically rig the control system, it’s generally based upon an optimal design weight. The helicopter is rarely ever at this exact weight. So the pilot ends up having to compensate anyway. But it does make less work for the pilot.

The collective is a lever that collectively changes the pitch of all the rotor blades simultaneously, regardless of whether it’s a two blade in a teeter totter configuration or more blades in a fully articulated rotor system. The common joke in the helicopter circles is “Pull the collective up, trees get smaller. Push the collective down, trees get bigger.”


The cyclic, on the other hand, cyclically changes the pitch of each blade individually depending on the direction you want the helicopter to move. This is more complicated than it sounds, because of a phenomenon called “gyroscopic procession” or phase lag. Gyroscopic procession means that in an arc shape plane of rotation the output occurs ninety degrees later in the plane of rotation than the input. On an aside, the way this is taught to young helicopter pilots is by using a manufacturer prop that is a bicycle wheel with a handle bar through the axis of rotation. The instructor will grip the handle and spin the wheel. Once it’s spinning, the instructor will tip the spinning wheel ninety degrees forward and watch his students reaction as the wheel jerks ninety degrees left or right depending on the direction the wheel is spinning as the phase lag becomes apparent. Students are usually dumfounded to see the wheel go in an entirely different direction than they were expecting.


In an authentic helicopter, a pilot manipulates the tail rotor by applying pressure to the left and right pedals effecting the helicopter’s yaw. However, in an RC helicopter this is accomplished through servos that are radio controlled through a hand held remote control.

All three axes are controlled through the hand held remote controller, but it takes a sophisticated operator to keep all three axes at equilibrium because the RC helicopter is not always oriented in the same direction the operator is oriented. This means that when the helicopter is facing you, all of the controls are backwards.

One of the most annoying things that can happen one flying your RC helicopter is when something goes wrong. I guess it’s more of a general statement than anything else since no one likes when things are going wrong. But, I find it particularly frustrating when something is going wrong with my RC helicopter.

I mean, the only reason I’m even flying RC helicopters because I find it peaceful and relaxing. When something goes wrong, I don’t find it peaceful and relaxing anymore.

One problem that I’ve experienced a lot is when my RC helicopter tail begins to wobble. I was fine that this is a particularly annoying thing, because it’s hard to assess what is wrong. It’s going to take some trial and error.

So more common solutions that I have found is that you can generally fill in the source of the wobble with some compound if it isn’t too big and see if that fixes it.

This particularly applies to when you’re installing new blades on your RC helicopter can’t figure out why they are wobbling. A little compound can fix it right up.

However, if you’re just finished installing new blades, you may want to try putting the old blades on first to see if they still fit perfectly. If they don’t fit perfectly anymore, then something went wrong with the install and then the mail is damaged on your RC helicopter.

That’s a more serious problem than just a blade wobble.

One of the more common solutions that people don’t tune the tail when they set up a new fbl unit. People who forget to tune the tail will always have a bit of a blade wobble at first. All it takes is a simple tuning and then your able to get everything back to normal.

The absolute worst thing that can happen is if it’s a mechanical problem. Something like chewed up gears and or slop binding in the tail linkage could be the main suspects.

While neither of these problems are catastrophic to your helicopter, it does take some money and some time to fix these. This is why it’s always important to routinely maintain your RC helicopter.

When I was first learning how to fly RC helicopters, my father taught me that you should always keep the distance between yourself and the helicopter at a minimum of 10 feet when you’re flying it.

But for the most part, there’s absolutely no reason to go up close to the RC helicopter when it’s flying.

Now, if you’re looking to diagnose the problem of the RC helicopter is having, you’re going to want to be up close to see it. However, this puts you at greater risk.
